This project will be conducted in the nine nonwadeable rivers within the Samar Island Natural Park (SINP), particularly in the jurisdictional regions of Western Samar (Gandara River, Calbiga River, and Golden Rivers), Eastern Samar (Can-avid Oras, Suribao and Taft Rivers) and Northern Samar (Catubig, Catarman and Pambujan rivers). Riverine species, particularly indigenous aquatic species, which are “traditionally fished” will be identified, and the traditional fishing practices of fishers will be documented. The standing biomass, abundance and size distribution, extent of exploitation as well as the conservation status of these species will be determined. Data on riverine fisheries are necessary solid foundations in developing approaches on management, culture, and sustainable utilization of IAS in the rivers of the SINP.
